How is "I Love You" encrypted to "P ZQAE TQR" in the movie The Imitation Game?

So I was watching the movie The Imitation Game and really liked it. At the end of movie I wanted to know how ‘P ZQAE TQR’ stands for I LOVE YOU. So I thought I should give it try if I could get it.

Let’s assume we only have the code ‘P ZQAE TQR’ and we don’t have its answer.

First look at most occurring letter in code i.e. Q and relate it with most occurring letters in a sentence i.e. a, e, i, o, u.
With some hit and trial method we get,
Q =O and E=E

So write it down,
? = a
E = e        | 0
? = i
Q = o       | -2
? = u

This table can be completed easily.
B = a        | -1
E = e        | 0
H = i         | +1
Q = o       | -2
R = u        | +3

Total sum = 7 (irrespective of sign)
We can see different rules will be applied for vowels and consonants.

The main trick is to start with first word i.e. ‘P’. We can see, P-7 = I.
So,
P
-7
I

Similarly
Z     Q     A     E
-14   *   +21   *
L     O     V    E

Also,
T     Q     R
-21   *    *
Y     O     U

Note: First letter of every word is subtracted by multiple of 7 in increasing order.
Also, * mark shows that rule is applied according to vowels.

I thought I should share it and please let me know if I am right.

  1. ^^Could you explain the other code written by Christopher?
    I reckon it is another key because the letters don't follow the same rule.

      W-4 = s
      I-4 = e
      I-4 = e

      It's only rule applied in this code i.e.
      X-4 = answer

  2. Hey!
    Thanks for explaining! I'm not too good at maths (nor am I good at English, not my mothertongue) but at least I got parts of what you did above. But the first table with the vowels
    B = a | -1
    E = e | 0
    H = i | +1
    Q = o | -2
    R = u | +3
    doesn't make sense to me, as it says that the vowel "i" is encrypted as H, which isn't true as "i" is represented as P. Mh i don't get it, could you help me, please?

    1. Thanks for your interest!

      As you have read above, there is one rule,"First letter of every word is subtracted by multiple of 7 in increasing order".

      Which goes like this -7, -14, -21, -28 etc. So it came there because of this, not by the table for vowels.

      For ease lets cut it down to three rules:
      1. Rule for first letter i.e. -7, -14, -21, -28
      2. Table for vowels (B, E, H, Q, R)
      3. Rule for rest of the letters 'after applying 1st rule' -14, +21, -28 etc.

      I hope it helps.

      Delete
    2. Wonderful, i think i got it now. So there's a hierarchy of rules and the "first-leter rule" is higher in that hierarchy than the vowel table and therefor "i" becomes "P". Thank you very much!

    3. i dont understand what number 3 means, can u further explain that please?

    4. Also, why do the letters B and V both have A as their cipher letter?

      Delete
    5. @unknown, I hope you get first rule, that first letter of every word goes in order -7, -14, -21 etc no matter what.
      After applying this to first letter of first word (i.e. -7), rest of letters of 'Fisrt word' will be in order +14, -21, +28....
      After applying this to first letter of second word (i.e. -14), rest of letters of 'Second word' will be in order +21, -28, +35.......
      This is followed so forth for every word.

      But whenever you strike letters "B, E, H, Q, R", you put "a, e, i, o, u" respectively in their places (except first letters)

      @Fox Entropy, dude you are mixing things up.
      Here B is code and 'a' is its answer.
      Also A is code and 'v' is its answer.

      So what you say is completely different from it.

      I hope you guys got the answer.

  4. How do you encrypt "i love you too" tho? You must subtract T by 28 and there's only 26 alphabets

    Hope you can help me, thanks :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The answer to I Love You Too would be "P ZQAE TQR VQQ".

      According to the rule 28 will be subtracted from the code (which you want to know), so you will have to add 28 in answer to get the code.
      i.e. T + 26 = T
      And,
      T + 2 = V
      And,
      O = Q

      That makes,
      TOO = VQQ

      I hope I got it right.

    3. Yes of course, the first encryption is very easy. One can translate is without any clue with a little hard work.
      But the other encryption (P Zqae Tqr) is very complicated. I first searched for answer on web but didn't find anything. To be honest I only translated it because I had the answer. And yes it is nearly impossible to decode without any clue.
      I hope you got the answer.

  6. Hey, using this cipher, what would "thank you" be coded as?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Since you are encoding (not decoding) you have to take things backwards.

      Same rules will be applied just backwards

      T H A N K
      +7 -14 * +21 -28
      ATBII

      Y O U
      +14 * *
      MQR

      So answer to THANK YOU is ATBII MQR.
      :)

  8. what about "good morning" be coded as?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Good morning should be NQQP AQWPHEW.
    And how you figure that out using Shoaib's cipher is by doing the following. You start with the letter G then add +7, so that would be N. Next you have a vowel which is O and if you look back at Shoaib's explanation in the beginning you find that O equals the letter Q. Then you have O one more time which again will be Q. Next up you have D, and this time you subtract -14 (according to this cipher you go back and forth between + and -) which makes us end up at the letter P. So far we have NQQP=GOOD.
    When you start with the Second word you start with adding +14. And why? It's because when you look at Shoaib's First rule the first word is -7, second word -14, third -21 etc. but now, because we are encoding and not decoding it's the other way around so you do +7, +14, +21. etc. So M and add +14 will get you the letter A. Next is O which is a vowel and equals Q. R here we subtract -21 and we end up with W. Then we have N and now we will add +28 (it's easier to think that N + 26=N and N + 2=P) so then we have P. Next is I which again is a vowel and equals H. Now we have N again but now we subtract -35 which gives us E, (again, I calculated N - 26=N and N - 9=E). And for last we have G and we are going to add +42 and that gives us W. So then we got AQWPHEW=MORNING.

    I hope you understand my very long explanation, I wanted to be thorough. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I tried to check my answer a couple of times just to be sure it was the right one!
    Try challenging yourself by making a three or four word sentence and try encoding yourself and post it here for others to decode. :) The more words in a sentence the messier it will get so I recommend doing it on a computer on a piece of paper, my brain had trouble calculating the two words by it self ;)

  11. I only see one thing that is out of place... why a one-letter word such as "I", "a" and so on shouldn't be replaced following the vowel rule?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Claudia,
      If you read above comments its explained that there is a hierarchy of of rules in which first letter rule comes first. Then there is there is table for vowels and the last is subtraction and addition rule for rest of letters.

      So the rules are applied in above order, that's why I and other vowels are not replaced by table of vowels.

  12. Hi Shoaib,

    Please correct me if I'm wrong but when we try to encrypt "I am" it is "P OR" but the letter "R" also stands for "u" in the vowel rule. Do you think that is there any other way to eliminate this problem without the use of "I'm" ?

    1. Hi there,
      Thanks for your interest, it's very passionate of you and good luck.

      For CINDERELLA, we will be encoding. So will need to go just opposite of above rule rule because the above rule is for decoding a code. So,

      C + 7 = J
      I = H
      N - 14 = Z
      D + 21 = Y
      E = E
      R - 28 = P
      E = E
      L + 35 = S
      L - 42 = V
      A = B

      So the code for Cinderella is "JHZYEPESVB"

      I apologize for late response :)
